Prior to the release of RC I have shown you how to create Open Search .osdx file, however after the new Windows RC release the some of the Open Search connector will not work, particular on those that you’ve created to search your own website. There are few minor changes Microsoft has made to the XML schema, but the basic principle to create a search connector is the same.

First let’s talk about what is a .osdx file, and how it works.

Windows 7, along with desktop search, introduces Federated Search. With Federated Search you can create small files that allow you to search beyond your PC in Windows Explorer.
Federated Search is based on OpenSearch and the RSS format. These are open standards so it’s fairly easy to create custom search connectors for any remote location you wish. For example, you can search various sites from within Windows Explorer.

You install the Search Connectors by double clicking them in Windows 7. Explorer will automatically install the connector. Then, create a shortcut to the actual Search, which is located in your Users Folder\Search.

On my own blog I’ve addressed this issue, I will recap again here.

If you are able to follow the instructions from my first post on how to create Open Search in Windows 7 BETA then you will be all good. Simple download the .osdx file and change the highlighted area shown below.

Note: the pack also includes Search Connectors on Google, Flicker, Amazon, eBay and my customer template etc.

Get the Open Search for your Windows 7 now, simple double click and you are ready to search almost anything on the internet right inside your Windows Explorer.
