Here is the recommended Windows Update option that you probably should be choosing, if you are not in the group of anti-windowsupate type of user.

It works pretty well actually in most of the cases but there is a tiny issue that may annoy you from time to time. It always automatic reboots your computer after one or more updates that require a reboot have been installed. If you are type of user who often has numerous applications opened and left over the night, you may hate having to reopen them all again next morning. You rather like having the choose to do so at another time.

Luckily, you can do so by adding a DWORD (32-bit) registry entry named NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers and set its value to 1, under

HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate

Note that you may have to manually create a new key for Windows Update if you don’t see it under subfolder Windows.

The change will take effect after the computer reboots.

Equivalently, you can archive the same by turning on an option in local Group Policy.

First, open Group Policy window by simply typing in “Group Policy” to the search box in Start Menu.

Then, navigate to Windows Update in

Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components

In the right panel, double click on No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installation, and Enable it.

The change takes effect right after a reboot.

From now on, Automatic Windows updates will not restart a computer automatically during a scheduled installation. Instead, it will notify the user to restart the computer.

Note that, this change only affects a situation where a user has logged onto the system.
